EI Associates Once Again Awarded Green School of the Year

September 7, 2018

EI Associates, a full-service architectural and engineering firm, is proud to announce being selected for a second consecutive year as the recipient of the Green School of the Year Award given by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)® for the design of the new Doe Run Elementary School.
Each year, the USGBC® hosts a Forever Green ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of people and projects in our region that advance sustainability through design. Last year, the Green School of the Year was awarded to EI Associates for the sustainable design of the new Hallowell Elementary School in the Hatboro-Horsham School District. This year, EI Associates is once again being recognized and awarded for Green School of the Year for the sustainable design of the new Doe Run Elementary School in the Manheim Central School District. The new Doe Run Elementary School, which was designed to meet USGBC LEED® Gold Certification standards will be highly sustainable by incorporating materials and systems that require minimal energy use. EI Associates will proudly be accepting the recognition and award for Green School of the Year for the new Doe Run Elementary School on November 1, 2018 from the U.S. Green Building Council.
EI Associates conducted a District-Wide Feasibility Study for the Manheim Central School District which indicated that the existing Doe Run Elementary School was structurally unsafe. In working with the District to address this issue and to address the increasing student population, it was determined that the District would save additional operational and energy costs by consolidating its elementary student population into two new high-energy performance buildings, one of them being the new Doe Run Elementary School.
The EI Associates Project Team designed the new elementary school with optimal building orientation for natural daylighting and outside views, energy-efficient lighting with daylight/occupancy sensors, outdoor air delivery monitoring, automated building control system, and a modern thermal envelope which further contributes to heating and cooling energy savings. The School was designed to use at least 30% less energy compared to a new baseline building.
The new elementary school was built on the existing site minimizing the impact from land development and was designed by following the natural contours of the site. The exterior façade of the building incorporates regional masonry, glazing, and metal elements sensitive to the surrounding community. The site of the new school provides a new bike path, playfields, parking, and community-use features while the facility itself provides an updated venue with a Media Center, large Cafeteria and Gymnasium allowing local youth groups and organizations to hold and participate in a variety of clubs and activities. The District welcomes the community to utilize these assembly facilities to promote and support community events.
The project is seeking USGBC LEED® Gold Certification to ensure performance goals were achieved. The project was awarded an Alternative & Clean Energy Grant which contributed $2,000,000 to the construction of the New Elementary School.
EI Associates is proud to be the recipient of numerous sustainable awards over the last several years from the U.S. Green Building Council, including Green School of the Year for a fourth time.
