SHALLOW BROOK INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL, MANCHESTER, PAFEATURED IN ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO HONORING EDUCATION DESIGN EXCELLENCE
November 2008 edition
HARRISBURG, PA - EI Associates, Harrisburg, announces that Shallow Brook Intermediate School, Manchester, PA has been selected for publication in Penton Media's American School & University 2008 Architectural Portfolio. The project is featured in the November 2008 edition of the magazine and also on the Web at www.SchoolDesigns.com. An annual competition honoring education design excellence, the Architectural Portfolio spotlights projects representing some of the most effective learning environments in America.
This Facility organizes the academic classrooms on three separate floors. The three story academic structure takes advantage of the sloping site, allows separation of grades by each floor level, and provides efficiency in construction by repeating and stacking common elements. The three stories are connected by three stair towers and an accessible elevator. Academic and support spaces common to each floor level are the following: Classrooms, Special Education Classrooms, Small Group Instructional Classrooms, Computer Labs, and Boys and Girls Toilets. First and second floors have direct exits to grade.
The second floor is the main floor with support areas and core instructional areas as follows: Administration, Guidance, Health Suite, Gymnasium, Locker Rooms, Kitchen, Cafeteria, Music Facilities, Media Center, and Mechanical Room. The Art Room is located on the lower, first floor, with access to the outdoors.
A jury of American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on Architecture for Education members and education administrators evaluated submissions from architectural firms, schools and universities across the country. Two hundred fifty-two projects were chosen for publication in AS&U, a monthly educational facilities, purchasing and business administration magazine reaching 65,000 facility planners, school and university administrators and architects with this issue. This is the 26th year the competition has been held.
Featured projects include designs that revitalize and refresh school and university campuses. The jury considered the following specific criteria to make its selections: great spaces for learning that are well-designed, multi-faceted, accommodating technology and sustainable/maintainable.
