SELINSGROVE - The Selinsgrove school board moved a step closer Monday night to providing the district with a facility that will meet the needs of an all-day kindergarten program.
Board members listened to the recommendations made by the All-Day Kindergarten Facilities Committee chaired by Tom Badman.
Mr. Badman told the board that he and committee members met with E.I. Associates, an architectural firm, in Harrisburg on Jan. 16 to iron out issues that arose during the firm's presentation of its feasibility study to the board Dec. 4.
Mr. Badman said the committee asked the firm for more details, reviewed deficiencies and offered recommendations during the last week's meeting.
The committee reviewed the options presented in the feasibility study and decided to recommend to the school board the option of making alterations and additions to the Selinsgrove Elementary School to bring it up to date and to no longer use the Jackson-Penn Elementary as a facility.
The project carries an estimated cost of about $17.1 million. The district would be eligible for state reimbursement.
The alterations and additions made to Selinsgrove Elementary would include more classrooms to meet the capacity need and the construction of a gymnasium.
The board approved E.I. Associates to prepare the schematic design for the project. As part of contract, the firm will receive 6 percent of the construction cost. The building is proposed to be completed in September 2009.
E.I. Associates also suggested improving the high school. The facilities committee recommended that the board focus on the elementary facility and postpone the $10 million project to improve the high school.
